Epoxy Flake Floors for Kalama Garages and Boat Bays

Boat trailers, river sand and slabs that tip toward the door. That is the Kalama garage, and a flake floor handles all three.

Free In-Home Estimate

Back a drift boat in off the Kalama River and you bring half the gravel bar with it. Wet hull, wet tires, sand in the treads. On bare concrete that grit gets ground in every time you walk across it, and the water sits in the low corner until it evaporates or soaks in. A broadcast flake floor gives the grit nothing to grind into and lets you squeegee the puddle straight out the door.

Kalama sits about 35 minutes north of our shop in Vancouver, up I-5 to exit 30. We make that run for garage floors because the town has exactly the kind of slabs this system was built for: older hillside garages that have been patched over the years, rural shop floors poured by the owner, and boat bays that never quite dry out. Each one needs a slightly different prep, and all three end up with the same finished floor.

What a Full-Broadcast Flake System Does With River Grit

The base coat is 100% solids epoxy, rolled onto concrete we have diamond ground to open the pores. While it is still wet we throw colored vinyl chips until the surface will not take any more. That full broadcast is the point. It builds texture for traction on a wet floor, hides tire marks and sand, and gives the polyaspartic topcoat something thick to lock onto. Finished thickness lands between 30 and 40 mils.

Polyaspartic matters in a town where the garage door stays open on summer afternoons and the light comes in low off the water. It is UV stable, so the floor will not go yellow near the door. It also resists hot tires, which is what peels cheap kit coatings after a drive back from Longview. Foot traffic is fine by the following morning, and cars can go back in after 24 to 48 hours. The warranty is 15 years.

Patched Hillside Slabs, Owner-Poured Shops, and Damp Bays by the Water

Up on the hillside above First Street, most garages are tuck-under or detached, and the concrete tends to be older with a few repairs and a real pitch toward the door. We keep that pitch; water should run out. Loose patches come out, get refilled with polyurea, and get ground flush. Out Kalama River Road the shops are usually broom-finished pours, which grind fine but take more time. Near the Port of Kalama waterfront, garages stay damp most of the winter, so those slabs get a moisture reading before anything gets mixed. Kalama runs a bit colder than Vancouver, which can push cure toward the full 48 hours.

Flake Floor Numbers for a Kalama Garage or Shop

Our flake system runs $4 to $9 per square foot. A typical two-car garage in Downtown Kalama is 400 to 500 square feet, so figure $1,600 to $4,500. A three-car or a garage with a boat bay at 600 to 750 square feet lands between $2,400 and $6,750. Heavy patching or a moisture primer pushes you toward the top. We measure first, then give you one firm price.

Frequently Asked Questions

My boat trailer drips river water all over the garage. Will the flake floor get slick?

Not the way bare paint does. The full chip broadcast leaves a fine texture under the topcoat, so wet shoes and tires still grip. If you want more bite near where the trailer drips, we can add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the final coat in that area only.

Our garage on the hill slopes a lot toward the door. Do you level it?

No, and you would not want us to. That slope is what drains rain and melted road slush out of the garage. We coat it as it sits. Flake does not show minor dips and waves the way a glossy solid color would, so a sloped floor still looks clean.

Is the drive from Vancouver up to exit 30 a problem for scheduling?

No. It is roughly 35 minutes each way, and we plan around it. One visit to measure and test, then the install days. We do not charge extra for the trip to Kalama.

Which flake colors hide river sand best?

Mid-tone blends do. Leggari Gravel, Moon Rock and Desert Storm all sit close to the color of Kalama River sand, so a little grit between cleanings disappears. Darker blends like Midnight look sharp but show dust. We bring sample boards so you can hold them up in your own garage light.

I poured my own shop slab out past China Garden Road. Can it take this system?

Usually. Owner-poured slabs are often broom finished and a little uneven, but grinding takes off the ridges and opens the surface. We look for cracks that move and areas that were never troweled tight. We will tell you at the estimate whether anything needs repair before coating.
