Castle Rock, WA Driveway Coatings for Concrete Drives and Aprons

Plenty of Castle Rock driveways are gravel, and we do not coat gravel. The concrete ones, and the aprons in front of shops, we can protect.

Free In-Home Estimate

Is it worth coating a concrete driveway in a town where half the lanes are gravel? For the concrete part, yes. On acreage out toward Toutle and Silver Lake, the gravel lane usually stops where a poured pad meets the shop or barn door, and that apron takes a beating. Every truck tire carries rock onto it. Frost lifts the surface paste. Spilled diesel and deicer soak in.

In town the picture changes. Older homes in Downtown Castle Rock often have short concrete drives that are tired, stained and starting to scale on top. A coating can fix the look and slow the wear on both kinds of slab. It cannot fix concrete that is heaving or breaking apart, and we will tell you that at the estimate rather than after.

Two Ways We Coat a Driveway, and How We Pick

If the slab is sound and you mostly want it protected, we use a penetrating densifier and a UV-stable acrylic sealer. If the surface is scaled, stained or patchy, the fix is a 40-to-100-mil overlay of polymer-modified cement with light aggregate tossed in for grip. Both resist salt and deicer. Foot traffic in 24 hours, cars in 48 to 72. Eight-year warranty.

Cracks get a straight answer. Hairline cracks are filled and mostly disappear. A structural crack that moves with the seasons will eventually show back through any coating, overlay included. On a rural apron where loaded trucks and tractors turn, we look hard at those cracks before quoting, because no topping changes what the ground underneath is doing.

Frost, Fog and Gravel on Castle Rock Concrete

Castle Rock sits along the Cowlitz River, damper and a touch colder than our home base. Frosty mornings and river fog keep concrete damp for long stretches, and freeze-thaw is what pops the surface off an unsealed drive. Gravel from country lanes grinds the top every time a tire turns. So we prep by grinding or pressure cleaning, fill hairline cracks, and pick a system that sheds water. We schedule outdoor work for a dry window, and since we drive about 50 minutes up I-5, we watch the forecast closely.

Driveway and Apron Pricing Around Castle Rock

Driveway work runs $3 to $7 per square foot. A 600-square-foot in-town drive comes to about $1,800 to $4,200. A 1,000-square-foot apron in front of a pole barn runs roughly $3,000 to $7,000. Sealer-only jobs land low, full overlays land high. We measure and check cracks before giving a final number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you coat my gravel lane out toward Toutle?

No. Coatings need concrete to bond to, and gravel moves. What we can do is coat the concrete apron where the lane meets the shop or garage. That is usually the part taking the worst abuse, since every tire drops its rocks right there.

The top of our old driveway in town is flaking off in patches. What causes that?

That is usually scaling from freeze-thaw. Water soaks into the top paste, freezes on a cold Castle Rock morning, and pops it loose. A polymer-modified overlay fills those scaled spots and seals the surface so water cannot get in the same way. If the slab underneath is solid, it is a good fix.

Will the coating hold up to a loaded hay truck or a tractor turning on the apron?

Straight rolling loads are fine. Hard turns with a heavy tractor can scuff any surface, and lugs on steel equipment can chip it. The bigger worry is the slab itself. If the apron is cracked and moving under that weight, the cracks will show through. We check that first and tell you.

How long before I can drive my truck back onto the coated driveway?

Foot traffic is fine the next day. Cars and pickups wait 48 to 72 hours, and in cool, foggy weather we lean toward the full 72. We try to plan around a dry stretch so you are not parked on the road for long.

Is a coated driveway slippery in frost?

We broadcast a light aggregate into the topcoat for grip, so it is not a smooth, slick surface. Frost is still frost, though. Any surface can get slick on an icy morning. The coating does stand up to deicer and salt, so you can treat it without hurting the finish.
