Driveway Coatings in Kalama for Steep, Wet and Wind-Beaten Concrete

Kalama driveways climb. They get rain sideways off the Columbia and grit from every trip to the river. The right coating depends on what shape the concrete is in.

What does a driveway on a Kalama hillside actually need? Grip first. A steep drive above First Street turns slick when it is wet, and it is wet for months. Then protection from water getting into the surface and freezing on the colder nights this town gets. Then something that holds up to trailer tongues, boat tires and the sand they haul up from the Kalama River.

We answer that two ways, and we decide which one after looking at the slab. Sound concrete with some surface wear gets hardened from within by a penetrating densifier, then topped with UV-stable acrylic sealer. Scaled, stained or patchy concrete gets a polymer-modified overlay built up anywhere from 40 to 100 mils, with light aggregate tossed in for traction. Both are a lot cheaper than tearing out and repouring.

Overlay or Sealer: How We Pick for a Kalama Drive

A densifier soaks into the concrete and hardens it from the inside, and the sealer on top keeps rain, oil and deicer from getting in. It does not change the look much. It is the right call for a newer drive on the bluffs that is still in decent shape and just needs to stay that way.

The overlay is for drives that have already taken damage. It bonds to the old surface and gives you a fresh, even finish with grit in it. It resists salt and deicer, which matters on the hill roads on icy mornings. One honest warning: hairline cracks get filled and disappear, but a crack that is still moving will come back through any coating eventually. And if the driveway is heaving or crumbling, it needs replacing, not coating. Driveway work carries an 8-year warranty.

Grades, River Grit and Rural Lots

Kalama has a few kinds of driveway. On the hillside above First Street they are short and steep, often running down to a tuck-under garage, and they shed a lot of water. Out Kalama River Road and China Garden Road the lots are rural, the drives are long, and some lead to shops and boat garages that see trailers every week. Near the Port of Kalama waterfront and Downtown Kalama, flat drives hold puddles in the fog season. We are about 35 minutes up I-5 from Vancouver, so we schedule two dry days in a row and watch the forecast before we come up.

Kalama Driveway Coating Costs, Worked Out

Driveway coatings run $3 to $7 per square foot. A short hillside drive of 400 square feet comes to $1,200 to $2,800. A two-car drive of about 600 square feet is $1,800 to $4,200. A long rural drive out the river road at 1,200 square feet is $3,600 to $8,400. Sealer-only work sits at the low end; full overlays sit higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our driveway on the hill is steep. Will a coating make it more slippery?

A plain glossy sealer can, so on sloped Kalama drives we seed fine grit into the last coat. It leaves a sandpaper-like texture you can feel under your shoes. On the steepest grades we add more of it near the top where cars brake.

Can I drive the boat trailer on it right away?

Foot traffic is fine a day later. Wait 48 to 72 hours before vehicles, and give it the full 72 before pulling a loaded trailer up a hill, since that is where tires twist and scrub. Cooler, damp Kalama weather can stretch that a bit.

Is it worth coating a driveway that is already cracked?

Depends on the cracks. Thin ones that are not moving get filled and disappear under an overlay. Wide cracks with one side higher than the other are still moving, and they will show through again. If the slab is breaking up or heaving, we will tell you to replace it.

Will the sealer stand up to deicer on icy mornings?

Yes. Both the overlay and the acrylic sealer resist salt and common deicers, and they keep the brine from soaking in and popping the surface when it freezes. Rinse the drive off in spring so the residue does not sit all season.

Does your crew drive up to Kalama for a driveway job?

We do. From our shop it is about 35 minutes to exit 30. We come up once to look at the slab and measure, then again for the install. Most driveways take one to two days on site.
